So, I have not been posting much lately. Which we all know is just a phase. I have successfully unaddicted myself from diet coke and alot of sugary things. Which is REALLY hard to do in this season! M & M's came out with MOCHA sweets. How evil was that? & Starbucks have that white peppermint thing and raspberry orange scones.
But, i have been well for the most part, though keeping very busy. I am hopeful for the future and enjoying hte present as best as i can. Stumbleupon has been a solace through some crazy times in my life, as well as introducing me to all kinds of ideas and entertainment and has led me to making wonderful new friends. Thank you SU creators & Staff.
&

Thank you to all of you who continue to subscribe to my pages even when I post nothing new for weeks.. and to those friends who drop lines of warm wishes and share favourite stumbles.

I hope you all enjoy a safe, amazing and memorable holiday season however you choose to spend it!

Will catch up soon.

Peace, love and freshly baked scones,

Priya.

This is a special Diwali post for one of my best friends, Akshay, whom I've known forever and so has acquired a lot of different nicknames: Crab, Crabby, Sebastian, Akki, Shay, Adorable, Oi you in the black shirt, mere yaar, lovey, dammit you're right... and so on.

For those of you who don't know what Diwali is, it's basically a New Year for Hindus. The old school lunar Indian calendar puts us in the year 2065 which ends on Oct. 28th and 2066 begins on Oct. 29th. Apparently normal Indians just write each other and say Happy Diwali or Happy Deepavali today and oct. 28, but Gujarati Indians (that's me) have this thing about calling up every single Indian person in your phonebook. This is the one time of year that you're guaranteed to receive a phonecall from someone you're related to no matter what corner of the world they might be on or how far off that relationship may be. We're known to keep in touch with 4th cousins! Or your sister-in-laws 2nd cousin or great, great aunts neighbor. If you have their phone number, you must call them that day and each and every person in the family talks to each and every other person available in the family you just called to say two little words. "Saal Mubarak" - Happy New Year.

Senza amore, senza Cristo. Hai ucciso ancora,
Come sempre, come uccisero i padri, come uccisero
Gli animali che ti videro per la prima volta.
E questo sangue odora come nel giorno
Quando il fratello disse all'altro fratello:
"Andiamo ai campi." E quell'eco fredda, tenace,

Man of My Time.
You are still the one with the stone and the sling,
Man of my time. You were in the cockpit,
With the malevolent wings, the meridians of death,
-I have seen you - in the chariot of fire, at the gallows,
At the wheels of torture. I have seen you: it was you,
With your exact science set on extermination,
Without love, without Christ. You have killed again,
As always, as your fathers killed,
as the animals killed that saw you for the first time.
And this blood smells as on the day
When one brother told the other brother:
"Let us go into the fields." And that echo, chill, tenacious,
Has reached down to you, within your day.
Forgot, O sons, the clouds of blood
Risen from the earth, forget your fathers:
Their tombs sink down in ashes,
Black birds, the wind, cover their heart.

I had to deal with a death in my extended family and was helping them out in North Carolina for a week by working at their Subway (EAT FRESH!). It reminded me of my highschool days working at petrol stations, been on my feet 9am to 10pm and a lifelong vegeterian have been learning to distinquish different meats was the trickiest part. I extended my trip to fly back on Aug. 12 from Charlotte, NC, but I'm leaving today for Virginia, and then Tennessee. Hope all my Stumbler friends have been doing fantastic!

after lots of delays and a very turbulent flight finally got into Atlanta ga at midnight and then roadtipping to a few places along the east coast. And I've been thinking I already have so much to say in just a day and no I won't fill you in because I'm tapping this out on an iPod but there has to be a site that collects bizarre scenarios seen and overheard at airports, on planes, trains and restaurants. If you have an airport story do stumble it my way!

Rhyming poetry usually turns me off. I find the words tend to be forced and the natural flow of language is obstructed by trying to be "clever". I think this is a nice translation but it makes me wonder what nuances I'm missing out in not understanding the original language (Russian) it was originally penned in.

Vladimir Nabokov. Verses

Silentium. Fyodor Tyutchev (translated by Vladimir Nabokov)

Speak not, lie hidden, and conceal
the way you dream, the things you feel.
Deep in your spirit let them rise
akin to stars in crystal skies
that set before the night is blurred:
delight in them and speak no word.

How can a heart expression find?
How should another know your mind?
Will he discern what quickens you?
A thought once uttered is untrue.
Dimmed is the fountainhead when stirred:
drink at the source and speak no word.

Live in your inner self alone
within your soul a world has grown,
the magic of veiled thoughts that might
be blinded by the outer light,
drowned in the noise of day, unheard...
take in their song and speak no word.

An Insidious Idol

 by Meister Eckhart

translated by Daniel Ladinsky.

Commerce is supported by keeping the individual at odds

with himself and others, by making us want more than we need, and

offering credit to buy what refined senses do not want.

The masses become shackled; I see how their eyes weep

and are desperate--of course they feel desperate--for something,

for some remedy

that a poor soul then feels needs

to be bought.

I find nothing more offensive than a god

who could condemn human instincts in us that time in all its wonder

have made perfect.

I feel nothing more destructive to the well-being of life

than to support a god that makes you feel unworthy and in debt to it.

I imagine erecting churches to such a strange god will assure

endless wars that commerce loves.

A god that could frighten is not a god--but an insiduous idol

and weapon in the hands of

the insane.

A god who talks of sin is worshipped

by the infirm.

I was once spiritually ill--we all pass through that--

but one day the intelligence

in my soul

cured

me.

PRAYERS FOR THE EARTH

For once on the face of the earth let's not speak in any language
Let's stop for one second and not move our arms so much.
It would be an exotic moment without rush, without engines.
We would all be together in a sudden strangeness.
Fisherman in the cold sea would not harm whales
And the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands.
Those who prepare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire,
Victory with no survivors
Would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers
in the shade doing nothing.
What I want should not be confused with total inactivity,
Life is what it is about.
I want no truck with death.
If we were not so single minded about keeping our lives moving,
And for once could do nothing,
Perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never
understanding ourselves
And of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.
