The plethora of history and "on this day" sites today were triggered by me clicking link-by-link through http://www.internet-resources.com/writers/wrlinks-history-ref.htm . NetMechanic is a useful tool but doesn't always distinguish between place-holder pages and "live" pages so I clickthrough a page every once in a bit and keep track of which pages haven't been clicked through for a long time.
