Brainwashing: The Hero-Worshipping Society

Organized religion is probably the most entertaining and the most debilitating form of mass entertainment, because along with the show comes a false sense of hope, that can only be obtained by surrendering the free will to a “higher power.” This is the comforting element of the conflicting teachings (knowing that you will be saved by some superior force), providing a counterbalance to the rest of the teachings of personal inferiority, unworthiness and helplessness, which are designed to make you know that you are incapable of saving yourself.

They are enslaved by its teachings of their own inferiority and “unworthiness,” in relation to the only worthy “One” (who will save their wretched hides). The dual message of helplessness and hope makes believers susceptible to this form of spiritual/psychological dictatorship, masquerading as the One True Religion.

The best that the faithful can hope for is to accept the teachings about their innate helplessness, to get access to the accompanying “out” clause. By signing on to the contract, they give up their free will to a more evolved superior, in exchange for promises of eternal rewards. For Catholics, the pope is the most superior human being; they believe in his claims of infallibility. For American Protestants, faith in the magical one, who “will come with the clouds,” is a more intangible belief and a more illogical one. This belief, that blind faith in an invisible superior brings fantastic magical rewards, makes Protestants even easier to manipulate. A populace that is conditioned to look for salvation to come down from the sky (whether it comes in the form of a god or an alien), will believe in anything that is done in their hero’s name.
http://www.bestcyrano.org/THOMASPAINE/?p=204

A related article on the manipulation of public consent, focusing on the “dark science” that p.r. guru Edward Bernays himself baptized as “the engineering of consent”, is found in another section of Cyrano, “The Ruling Class”.
http://www.bestcyrano.org/bernaysPropaganda.htm

Ex-believers often feel doubly misunderstood and isolated. Family and friends who remain in the group, even when not outright rejecting, will probably have limited tolerance for the views of someone who has repudiated what they believe. People who do not share the same background may have difficulty understand the intense and long lasting effects of having been a member of a restrictive religion. Often the connection between current life difficulties and past religious experience is not apparent even to the former member.

Strongly held beliefs greatly complicate family dynamics when not all family members share those beliefs. Unlike former members of "cults" whose families likely opposed their religious involvement, individuals who leave church based groups often leave family members behind, and may need support in coping with the anger, pain, and grief of being misunderstood and judged by family and friends. They will also need assistance in maintaining a personal philosophy that clashes with deeply held beliefs of family members. Family interactions sometimes become dominated by well meant attempts of the "faithful" to persuade their "lost loved one" to return to "the Fold."
Psychological Issues of Former Members of Restrictive Religious Groups
Restrictive religious groups, characterized by rigid beliefs, authoritarian structure, rejection of mainstream culture, and isolation from outside influences that might lead to questions about the group's teachings, come in many forms, from fringe cults to well established churches. While the experience of individuals involved with so-called cults that clearly deviate from orthodox religious practice has been extensively discussed in both popular and professional literature, there has been relatively little recognition of the fact that similar issues are often associated with conservative forms of mainstream religion. While much of what follows is based on the experience of former members of Christian fundamentalist groups, there are parallels with restrictive groups from all traditions.
http://home.earthlink.net/~jcmmsm/article/index.html

Seventh-day Adventism
History of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh-day_Adventist_Church

******Criticism of the Seventh-day Adventist Church******

The Adventist church has received criticism along several lines, including its allegedly heterodox doctrines, in relation to Ellen G. White and her status within the church, and in relation to alleged exclusivist attitudes and behaviour.[42] Many high profile critics of the church are former Adventists, such as D. M. Canright, Walter Rea and Dale Ratzlaff.

Several distinctive Adventist doctrines have been identified as heterodox by critics. Teachings which have come under repeated scrutiny are the annihilationist view of hell, the investigative judgment (and related view of the atonement), and certain eschatological views. Adventists have often been accused of legalism, because of their emphasis on law-keeping and strict Sabbath-observance.[43][44]

While some Christians are inclined to classify Adventism as a sectarian group on the basis of its atypical doctrines, others (such as Walter Martin and Donald Barnhouse) have considered it a truly Christian church. Notably, Billy Graham invited Adventists to be part of his crusades after Eternity, a conservative Christian magazine edited by Barnhouse, asserted that Adventists are Christians in 1956.[45] Martin’s The Truth about Seventh-day Adventists (1960) marked a turning point in the way Adventism was viewed.[46]
"...it is perfectly possible to be a Seventh-day Adventist and be a true follower of Jesus Christ despite heterodox concepts..." – Walter Martin, Kingdom of the Cults[47]

"Adventism is indeed a cult, and those who are in it are caught up in a cult, but they can be true Christians who are held in bondage. When they realize the nature of Adventism, they will do one of two things: they will leave and follow Jesus, or they will stay. I make no assumptions as to the ones who stay, but I believe the ones who follow Jesus where He leads are truly His sheep.(Stupid to be a sheep"

"The true nature of the underlying SDA loyalty. Again, as River so well explained, calling Adventism a cult does not mean that individuals are not Christians. The church is confusion—and confusion is always a mark of evil. It is never a sign of God's Spirit and presence."
You go girl! Adventism is more about hate, pride, self-righteousness, judgement, etc. than it is about Christ and His love for all those He died for. It is finished, they refuse to accept it. That is another gospel, one that kills so many spiritually. Adventism is evil. I hate it.
many others are doing a great job of exposing the dark side of Adventism. The White Estate is doing its best to try to silence these sources of information.

3. Alert non-Adventists to what Adventism is really all about. Don't let Adventism slip away when the spotlight is on cults. Adventism must be listed as a cult, right along side of Mormonism, the Jehovah Witnesses, Christian Scientists and Scientologists.
