Based on my knowledge of other ancient religious iconography that is certainly, or *almost* certainly, inspired by total solar eclipses, I think that the Chinese taotie "monster" probably was inspired by total solar eclipses witnessed by ancient Chinese civilizations such as the Shang Dynasty. Here is part of a Facebook message that I just shared with an American archaeologist who is interested in how eclipses influenced ancient religious beliefs -

I have reasonable grounds to believe that the taotie is quite probably an ancient Chinese representation of the sun god as inspired/informed by total solar eclipse phenomena. It compares very favorably with Mayan and Aztec religious iconography that is all but conclusively TSE inspired AFAIAC. The taotie is a dragon/phoenix eclipse monster winged sun symbol thingy in my informed opinion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taotie

http://www.cultural-china.com/chinaWH/html/en/13Traditions1323.html

http://www.pitt.edu/~asian/week-2/week-2.html

Should have wangled that theory into a trip to China. . .

Here's an update from our Facebook "chat" -

:The concept of the moon devouring the sun could fit this icon.

Exactly. I take note of - It is said that the monster was extremely greedy of eating and would eat anything within its sight. It even ate its own body. So, the image of the taotie is just a big head and a big mouth without body. The taotie ate too much and died as a result.

The Chinese word for eclipse means "eat". The parallels between this description of the taotie and the Hindu god Rahu who is an acknowledged eclipse demon/monster are striking. . .

http://www.siamese-dream.com/page/siam1/CTGY/article-hindu-gods-rahu
Well if I was "honest" wouldn't I report you to the authorities or something Sgt. Wilson?

I could be mistaken but it seems to me that what you really need is someone who is somewhat "less than honest".

Right?

How about letting me know what you propose and I will consider how "honest" I want to be.
So essentially you are saying that you have stolen or at least "missing" Iraqi funds in your possession and you want me to help you to "launder" that money?

Is that correct Sgt. Wilson?
Dear Sgt. Wilson,

I have read the BBC News article but your intentions are not entirely clear. What do you propose to share with me and how do you propose to share it? It seem that most of the money spoken about in the article is in a "secure location" for counting purposes and will eventually be returned to Iraq to help rebuild the country. i.e Iraq.

I do take note of the fact that the article concludes by saying -

Five US soldiers are currently being questioned by military officials after some of that money was allegedly stolen following its discovery.

Are you proposing to share this allegedly stolen money with me?

If so why and how?

Sincerely,

Robin Edgar
Dear Friend,

I know you would be surprised to read from someone relatively unknown to you before now. My name is Greg Wilson, a master sgt. of The U.S. Marine, deployed to Iraq in the beginning of the war in 2003.

I would like to share some highly personal classified information about my personal experience and role which I played in the pursuit of my career serving under the U.S ARMY which was at the fore-front of the war in Iraq. Though, I would like to hold back certain information for security reasons for now until you have found time to visit the BBC website stated below blah blah blah. . .

Like anyone else who is reasonably active on the internet I get several "Nigerian Scam" emails in my inbox every week. Sometimes I get several such fraudulent emails asking me to fraudulently launder money, often ill-gotten gains of deceased African dictators, in a single day. And that goes for two or three of my individual email addresses. . .

I ignore most of these internet scam emails but, every now and then. . . I reply to one of these scamming emails to send a message to the scammer aka fraud artist at the other end. When these "Nigerians Scam" emails appeal to God or Jesus in their fraudulent claims I usually remind the scammer that God is 100% aware of their evil thoughts, words, and deeds.

I found another Nigerian Scam email in the inbox of my main yahoo.ca email address minutes ago, this one asking me to fraudulently "RELOCATE THIS SUM OF FIVE MILLION,THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS" of a "MRS. JOYCE LAKE AN AMERICA CITIZEN WHO DIED IN A PLANE CRASH IN 2000" carrying the subject heading:

WITH DUE RESPECT

I believe that if you want to be respected, you should be respectable. . . and the scammer DID solicit my URGENT REPLY so I responded quite urgently with the email you see reproduced below. I somehow failed to see the ALL-CAPS demand FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION and replied in a rather "less than kind" manner. . .
I am not the kind of person who thows around the phrase "Fuck off" on a daily basis, not even a weekly basis, and even less so the phrase "Fuck off, asshole" which I *might* use a few times in a year, but I just wasn't feeling very KIND this morning.
Maybe next time I will be more polite when giving a Nigerian Scam fraud artist a piece of my mind. . .

Comment continued -

Allow me to point to one particularly revealing piece of Intelligent Design in the Creation, the total solar eclipse. Total solar eclipses would never take place if there was not a very precise reciprocal relationship between the sizes of the Earth's sun and moon and their distances from the Earth. The moon's diameter is almost exactly 400 times smaller than that of the sun but by "coincidence" the moon just happens to be in an orbit around the Earth that is approximately 400 times closer to the Earth than the sun, with some fluctuation due to the somewhat elliptic orbits of the moon around the Earth and the Earth around the sun. Thus the apparent sizes of the sun and moon, as observed by the eyes of intelligent life living on this planet, are more or less identical. If the diameter of the moon was only a few percent smaller it would never totally eclipse the sun. That "astonishing coincidence of astronomy" alone ought to make people stop and think that maybe just maybe this very precise celestial geometry is not just a random chance "coincidence", but there is an even more spectacular "coincidence" involved in the total solar eclipse. When the Earth's moon totally eclipses our primary source of light, without which human beings and other *creatures* would not even exist let alone be able to see, it produces a visual phenomenon that distinctly resembles our organ of sight, so much so that even a modern professional astronomer of some renown was once inspired to refer to a total solar eclipse that he was observing for the purposes of science as "the Eye of God." So now you have two rather amazing "coincidences" involved in the total solar eclipse, one being the very precise reciprocal relationship between the sizes of the sun and moon and their distances from the Earth that allows total solar eclipses to occur at all and the even more unusual "coincidence" that, when totally eclipsed by the moon, out primary source of light distinctly resembles our organ of sight. What are the odds against these truly astonishing "coincidences" occurring only by pure random chance? I would say they are astronomically high odds.

Reasoning and mental acuity can very readily lead intelligent people to the conclusion that the total solar eclipse "Eye of God" is more likely to be the product of Intelligent Design than mere random chance "coincidence" devoid of any design whatsoever. What was it that St. Paul said? The Creator's invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made. Isn't one of the Creator's " invisible attributes" divine omniscience? Is it possible that the Creator of the Universe aka God has incorporated a rather spectacular symbolic reminder of its attribute of divine omniscience into the Intelligent Design of our solar system? Is it possible that the total solar eclipse "Eye of God" is a regularly occurring "Sign in the Heavens" intended to remind human beings that God "sees" what goes on in the world? Atheists can try to convince themselves that the total solar eclipse "Eye of God' is just a meaningless weird "coincidence" but believers, and indeed those who *know* from profound personal experience of God that there is indeed a Creator and that the Creator is highly aware of what happens on our planet, have good reason to see the total solar eclipse "Eye of God" as not only spectacular evidence of Intelligent Design but also a bona fide Sign of God.

Responsibilities -

Because of the importance of communicating with as wide an audience as possible, the Simonyi Professor is not expected to undertake substantial teaching and administrative duties within Oxford University: any such efforts should be directed primarily towards the education of non-specialists. The Professor should communicate scientific ideas through a variety of media, in order to reach a wide range of people. These include, but are not limited to, public lectures, writing articles and books, and television and radio appearances. The Professor's role in disseminating scientific knowledge is also expected to involve travel from Oxford to other cities and countries.

The above part of the job description supports my contention that professor Dawkins' devotion of a *substantial* amount of his time and energy to his anti-religious crusade substantially interfered with his *responsibilities* as Oxford University Chair for the Public Understanding of Science. Also. . . It seems to me that "communicating with as wide an audience as possible" necessarily includes successfully communicating with God believing people who comprise the vast majority of human beings. How many God believing people want to have an obnoxious anti-religious bigot telling them about science?

Did professor Richard Dawkins actually "retire" as Oxford University Chair for the Public Understanding of Science, or was he politely asked to step down to make room for a more appropriate person to fill the job?

Here is the latest follow-up comment that I just submitted to this TIMES Online article about Richard Dawkins.

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article4331024.ece?Submitted=true

@ Mette Esbensen-Kramer - Richard Dawkins certainly is intolerant, arrogant, and indeed quite evangelical in his militant atheism. I dare say that He Is The Very Model Of An Atheist Supremacist ;-) although P.Z. Myers, Christopher Hitchens and other fundamentalist atheists can fill that role too.

end quote

I think I will have a bit of fun today and write up some lyrics for a song titled -

'I Am The Very Model Of An Atheist Supremacist'. ;-)
