LAVASA - FUTURE CITIES

Most Indian cities today are reeling under problems of infrastructure collapse because of increasing population, lack of planning and poor management. The underlying cause very clearly is absence of a robust governance structure and its accountability to public. India has the 2nd largest urban system in the world. 310 million live in 5161 cities and towns. That's like cramming the entire population of America into the third of the space. Most Indian cities are probably operating at their peak levels of occupancy. Perhaps in some cases, it's a miracle they still work. To make matters worse, in the next 30 years , another 400 million will migrate to these cities. That's about twenty Australias for you. And by 2030, India's urban population is estimated to reach a staggering 575 million. It's about time somebody asked the question: in the years to come, where will India live? Lavasa, in association with The Times of India presents Lavasa Future Cities, an initiative borne of a vision to build new cities that are sensitive to the environment and intelligently planned for a fast-evolving future. It is an unchangeable fact that the India of tomorrow twill find expression in its cities. What we can question and hence change is how that future will be lived. It's time we started a new conversation. Lavasa Future Cities; it starts now.

Formed in May 2008, the goal of the Green Planet Bicycle Riders' Association is: - To promote the use of bicycles in the community for transportation, recreation and physical fitness. - To provide bicycle rides at various levels of challenge so that every bicycle rider can participate in group activities - To educate members and the public about safe riding habits and bicycle etiquette. - To promote public recognition of the need for safe cycling conditions and cycling safety - To co-operate with public authorities in promoting public cycling facilities including, but not limited to bicycling paths, lanes and trails.

Shrinivas Havaldar, a gymnast of national repute who has several Mallakhamb titles to his credit and is presently coaching young enthusiasts in the city, has launched the country's first-ever website dedicated to the sport of Mallakhamb. With information on the history of the traditional Indian sport (called as pole gymnastics in English), benefits and types of Mallakhamb, the website is a virtual guide to various local, state and national level tournaments. Havaldar has been into coaching for the last 10 years and has established three coaching academies in various parts of the city. "It is disappointing to see that Puneites today don't even know what Mallakhamb is. It is especially disappointing because the city in the yesteryears used be known for this sport. The sport is dying and this is my effort to revive it," Havaldar said.
