heard the original version of Tangled Up in Blue today and I realized that what I really love about the song besides the lyrics and their sense of answerless searching is the drums that were missing from the original. The dynamics as well as changes in frequency of punctuation create this building tension and lend a whole new dimension to the lyrics.

This is an imaginary dialogue that went through my head today as I lifted weights, and caught sight of an absolutely beautiful latina on a treadmill who I could have sworn was looking at me too.

He: Can I give you a weird compliment?

Her: (he doesn't wait for her to answer)

He: . . .you have the coolest forehead-- the way it slopes back so dramatically, it looks like an Aztec sculpture.

Her(after awkward pause): Uh. . . thanks. That is a pretty weird compliment. How long did it take you to think of that?

He: I actually thought of it the first time I saw you, and I thought it would be too weird just to walk up to you and compliment you like that, but with so much time between then and now to deliberate I came to the conclusion that upon witnessing anything of beauty bordering on otherwordly divinity, I should voice my praise , no matter how creepy, ineloquent, or otherwise inadequate (or just as worse: too strong, sappy, or cliched) it may be in relation to the aforementioned depth of my vision.

Her: Well thank you. (rambles on until she finds a way to mention her boyfriend)

He (unable to carry on another coherent sentence, smiles and sheepishly returns to the bench)

even my imaginary dialogues-- which are sadly much more verbose than any of my actual attempts to initiate conversation with a beautiful woman-- end in dumbfoundedness and a sense of unworthiness. If I could just talk to women like how I talk to my sister. . .

But then wouldn't it feel like a brother-sister relationship?

Can't fucking win.

If she responded with something like, "yes, well I am Mexican," I had even primed the area of my brain that embraces Meso-American culture. I would ask if she knew that Aztecs used to bind babies' foreheads to get her unique sloped look, and seguing perhaps into a discussion of how most of my favorite writers are latin-- that Octavio Paz is my favorite poet (have you ever read any), and of course Lorca and Gabbo. I was ready for any response, as long as it was the kind I would give (which it never is)

Long story short, I couldn't even voice a hello, or figure out any practical way of introducing myself to her. I positioned myself with a jump rope five feet to her left while she did ab crunches, hoping for an opportunity to say my ridiculous (though genuine) compliment. Anything to talk to her. I watched as she cleaned her mat, and slowly-- torturously-- walked by me, unable to say a word the whole time.

She kept her head looking mostly perpendicular, but I think maybe she could see me out of the corner of her eye. And I think maybe she had a tiny curl of a smile on her lips. And I think that if I thought I saw that-- with my horrible inferiority complex-- there's a very good chance I was not just seeing things.

What do I do next time?
