more Baudelaire becuase I can't get enough lately:

The Confession
Once, only once, beloved and gentle lady,
Upon my arm you leaned your arm of snow.
And on my spirit’s background, dim and shady,
That memory flashes now.

The hour was late, and like a medal gleaming
The full moon showed her face,
And the night’s splendour over Paris streaming,
Filled every silent place.

Along the houses, in the doorways hiding,
Cats passed with stealthy tread
And listening ear, or followed, slowly gliding,
Like ghosts of dear ones dead.

Sudden, amid our frank and free relation,
Born of that limpid light,
From you, rich instrument, whose sole vibration
Was radiancy and light —

From you, joyous as bugle-call resounding
Across the woods at morn,
With sharp and faltering accent, strangely sounding,
Escaped one note forlorn.

Like some misshapen infant, dark, neglected,
Its kindred blush to own,
And long have hidden, by no eye detected,
In some dim cave unknown.

Your clashing note cried clear, poor, prisoned spirit,
That nothing in the world is sure or fast,
And that man’s selfishness, though decked as merit,
Betrays itself at last.

That hard the lot to be a queen of beauty,
And all is fruitless, like the treadmill toil
Of some paid dancer, fainting at her duty,
Still with her vacant smile.

That if one build on hearts, ill shall befall it,
That all things crack, and love and beauty flee,
Until oblivion flings them in his wallet,
Spoil of eternity.

Oft have I called to mind that night enchanted,
The silence and the languor over all,
And that wild confidence, thus harshly chanted,
At the heart’s confessional.

The Poison
by Baudelaire

O wine can clothe in luxury
The ale-house foul and low,
And build a golden portico
With its red alchemy . . .
Like cloudy sunset in the evening glow.

And opium dreams can roam and rove
Past that which has no bourne,
Can plumb eternity, and mourn
The emptiness of love
And satiate the soul with joys forlorn.

All is nothing to the bane
That trickles from your eyes,
True mirrors of my miseries . . .
Green lakes where dreams in vain
Would quench in bitter gulfs their agonies.

Ah, nothing to the monstrous flow
That mingles with your breath
That brings oblivion beneath
Its waves of vertigo,
And bears me fainting to the brink of Death!

What's stupid about this article is that it sees the world as being totally polar. Because you can successfully make an argument for the healthy existence of free software does NOT mean that all software should be free. To use the author's own analogy, it is no coincidence that in the world today our roads are a hybrid of free and toll roads. It's an organic pattern. To further the analogy, notice how important, expensive roads tend to be the ones with tolls. I should also note that the road analogy is totally broken. There are really absolutely NO free roads. All roads are paid for by taxpayers, whether it's at the tollbooth or on in their income tax is irrelevant. So, unless you are willing to fund a totally free software industry with taxpayer dollars you are SOL my friend.

While the information portrayed in this graph is interesting and relevant, it's a horrible presentation of said graph. I might point out that EVERY country above the US is much less populated than the US. Why is this important, you ask? The more people you cram in any given space the more idiots tend to prevail. Let the record show that the minority in the US still outranks almost every country above it by miles. My point is that we may not evolutionary "gravity" but we have the "mass" in spades. And why is THIS important, you ask? Regardless of ratios, the US is still the nexus for evolutionary science which largely proceeds without regard to popular opinion.

Your attempts to smear the US as being cut from the broad cloth of "creationists" is disingenuous and myopic.

Unpatriotic? Try treasonous. They should count themselves fortunate if they simply get fired when the government takes an equity position in these companies that have acted criminally irresponsible in the last few years. Of course, their severance package probably pays them more than their contracts, so it's pretty much a lose/lose for the US. Nice to know none of these Wall Street insider assholes give a shit.

Fuck children that bicker about politics like they're arguing over the superiority of this sports team or that. The American political system has devolved into a parking lot brawl after a football game. It's disgusting and I sadly have to report that we've got everything that's coming to us for this shit-hole that we've wrought.
