Meet Stephen Hemsley. He's the CEO of UnitedHealth. In 2007, he earned $13.2 million dollars. His unexercised stock options total three-quarters of a billion dollars. That's right - billion.

Where does he get all that money? He gets it from you. Your health, to be exact. Every time UnitedHealth denies one of their customers a treatment, that's more money in Hemsley's pocket

Mark Boyle, 28, set off at the end of last month on his trek from Bristol, but managed only around 300 miles to the French port before hanging up his boots.

...

But the former organic food entrepreneur - who belongs to the Freeconomy movement which wants to get rid of money altogether - only managed to get to Calais before the language and cold defeated him.
...

He said: "Not only did no one ... speak the language, they also see us as just a bunch of freeloading backpackers, which is the complete opposite of what the pilgrimage is really about.

"That really scared us, and given that we now were pretty much out of food, hadn't slept in days and were really cold, we had to reassess the whole situation.

"We spoke to a few people who were willing to talk and they said that France would not go for this unless we could speak fluent French, which none of us could.

You have to love the French people!

From the page: "In 2007, Robertson was denied coverage by Golden Rule Insurance, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group. In a letter explaining the denial, the company claimed that Robertsonâ€s previous C-section made her a financial risk for the company. If she had another C-section within the first three years of coverage, the company would not profit from her policy. It was a risk they werenâ€t willing to take and because the Colorado Insurance Division would not allow them to exclude C-section benefits for the first three years, they denied her coverage altogether.

Robertsonâ€s story may sound all too familiar, but unfortunately it doesnâ€t end there. In that same letter, Golden Rule went on to suggest what Robertson might do to make herself eligible for coverage: Get sterlized."

On being a solo female hiker | Dressed in Dirt

â€oeWow. She really is drunk,” he said. â€oeLook how her eyes are glazed over.”
I turned to him and said, â€oeNo. Itâ€s you. I donâ€t feel comfortable with you. So you can talk to any of these guys (I pointed to the male hikers), but donâ€t talk to me. In fact, Iâ€m leaving.”
And I did.
One of the male hikers caught up with me in the parking lot and told me that he didnâ€t like the things that man said about women and asked me if I was ok, which was nice, but I donâ€t understand why men donâ€t stand up to other men about things like this.
A guy friend of mine said that he has to pick his battles, and I can understand that. I feel the same way-itâ€s just hard to know which battles to choose. It is clear to me that if a guy is hassling me, I should stand up for myself. But if I take every opportunity to speak up when a man says something degrading about women, Iâ€ll get exhausted and run the risk of being called a â€oefemi-nazi” or a â€oeman-hater,” and perhaps thatâ€s the way Iâ€m coming off right now.

Amen to this. I think these kind of men don't stick up for women because they are scared that someone might call him a woman (oh, the horror!), or pussy whipped, or some other bullshit delivered by their ball busting friends about how their woman needs to have a tighter leash. In short, they are scared that they might be seen as less than a man (a woman) and that terrifies them. We all fear what we do not understand.

From the page: Exactly 400 years ago in 1609, one Galileo Galilei popularized a new invention: the telescope. The man had crazy gadgets to support crazy theories -- such as Copernicus' idea that the sun was at the center of the universe. He was condemned by the church for his subversive ideas, but both his telescope and ideas lived on.

Yes, I love it when he says "Men have created everything you see around you (buildings, cars, medicine)" and I am thinking to myself that a woman "created" him. I also wonder if he calls his own mother a whore, and if, perhaps, she actually was a whore who told him that men are worthless, etc.
