Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles

My daughter once relayed one of these comics to me. Something about the bear, Mr. Wiggles, eating Neil's sweaty underwear. "How did it taste?" "Like a holocaust."

For some reason it struck a nerve and we both started giggling. I said "A holocaust is never funny."

Unfortunately she had just given me a vitamin lozenge, and I inhaled it as I started laughing again. It blocked my windpipe. I could not get any air in my throat and I couldn't swallow. My eyes watered up, and I tried to cough. I stood up and leaned over to have gravity help get it to come back out. I was drooling on the floor. She ran over from the other side of the room and slapped my back hard, and it dislodged. I was gasping and crying, unnerved by the choking.

Until I realized what my last words could have been. Then I started laughing again.

Remember children, inappropriate humor can kill.

I drove down a road last night that I hadn't driven in a long time, probably since high school. I wondered if the pizza place was still there... yup, the sign was lit - Dominics. Seeing it brought up a clear memory of Eric playing a simple tune he was learning on his guitar leaning on his car outside the restaurant.

I had hung out with him for a number of months, going on long drives on summer nights in his rusty convertible Spitfire that he was constantly tinkering on, going to Bible studies together... We went to the Air and Space museum, and he ate freeze dried ice cream from my fingers. He had a deep voice with a booming laugh. Loose flannel shirts over a rock hard body... a gentle, chaste young man. Summers his hair would be flecked with paint from his job painting water and radio towers. He was proud of how tough his feet got, walking barefoot all summer, climbing trees.

I looked up his family's names this morning. I found a YouTube video of someone who might be his older brother, teaching biology now. The lower notes of his voice sound familiar.

It's a little jarring how clearly I can see his face today. Often it's difficult, it's been so long - over 25 years ago he fell from one of the radio towers he was hired to paint the week after I graduated high school. He was already in college, diving into an electrical engineering degree.

His smile made me melt.
