Mrs Mary Kirby
By Makakman

Across the Romney Marsh as far as the eye could see lambs and their mothers signaled a new beginning...

`Look there', in unison the children lining the fence nearest to Mary turned and looked where she pointed like a group of deck officers searching for their first site of terra firma.

'Is that what being a mum's all about? Looking after their babies all the time?' Jack asked their teacher Mrs Mary Kirby.

'Yes, that's all mums have time for, that and looking after their home'.

'That part's easy!' Jack exclaimed.

Mary glanced down and gave him a quizzical look.

'That's what dad says anyway!'

Mary had a wry smile on her face, 'Yes, many dads think that but they've rarely done it themselves.

'I'm having a baby brother' Jack blurted out.

'How fantastic, is that what your mother told you?'

'No, she says she doesn't know yet, it's too early to say but I do. It's definitely a boy'. Proclaimed Jack.

'What's his name going to be?' shouted Tom, the blond child two down from Jack.

'David, he's going to be a great footballer.'

'Is he named after David Beckham by chance?' Mary said.

'That's right Miss, the best footballer ever!'

'Have you got kids Miss?' Tom asked.

'No Tom I don't' came the veiled reply.

'Why's that then Miss?'

Turning to face Tom she paused then said with a pained expression on her face. 'I can't have children, it's just one of those things Tom'.

He looked out across the marshes with an expression that was crossed between amazement and plain misunderstanding but having seen Mary's face he kept quiet not willing to delve any deeper. Luckily for Mary no one else took the conversation forward any further. Her prayers had come true three years ago but with those dreams realized came the shattering news. The news being that Emma had complications and probably wouldn't live beyond her third year. Mary stood there paralyzed thinking about her Emma, Emma Louise Kirby, born three years ago but not able to survive past her second birthday.

A raindrop hit Mary squarely on the nose, which woke her from her daydream. 'Come on, let's get back on the bus before the heavens open and we all get drenched. Get Mark to lower the ramp will you Tom'.

Tom walked as fast as he could across the rough terrain.

'I think the battery's gone on my chair Miss' Jack said.

'Never mind, I need the exercise.'

Jack took one last look at the new born lambs and their mothers before turning towards the bus and their route back home.

'When are we coming back Miss?' Jack bemoaned.

'Soon Jack, maybe next time your mum could come along and bring your new baby brother?'

'Yeah' Jack exclaimed excitedly, 'that would be great'.

Last Chance Saloon
by Makakman

He sat in the bar, legs crossed with cigarette in hand. He spotted a girl, a young girl reclining by the window. She had long brown hair cascading over her slender shoulders, the light bounced of it like a rainbow off of a waterfall.

Why was she here? Was she meeting someone or just passing the time like himself. The problem with him was that this was his only occupation, what else could he do?

Carol, yes that's what I'll call her, it suits her. She looks lonely, needy, like the world is her enemy. The drink she's staring into looks like flat nats twistle.

'Hey bud, get me another beer will ya?'

He picks up the fresh sparkling bottle along with his own and takes a slow walk across to the girl. He reaches her table and puts the beer down gently in front of her as if the noise would wake her from her deathly slumber.

She looks up fixing him with a cold stare.

'Hi, I'm Jack' he says in his smooth southern drawl.

After a pause she softens her gaze, 'I'm Carol, that mine?'

As Jack takes a seat he smiles with surprise.

'What, that your girlfriends name or something? Was that who I saw you on the phone to earlier?'

'No, no, just an old contact, he's been trying to meet up for a while now!'

'You seem a sociable guy, why don't you meet him?'

'He's coming here soon actually, you'll get to meet him.'

'Gee thanks, if you've been avoiding him he can't be much of a guy!'

'He's decent enough, I'm the one who people usually avoid!'

'I cant' believe that Jack, you seem a sweet guy.'

That last comment sent a shiver down his spine as if someone had walked over his grave. He looked into her eyes and took a deep breath, savouring the final moment of their contact. She got lucky, he couldn't and wouldn't see this one through, age had caught up with him.

In the distance sirens could be heard, another punk probably holding up a filling station with a rusted shot gun.

'What you do for a living?' she asked.

"In-between jobs, bitch of a boss sacked me from my last post.'

'Sorry to hear that, what happened?'

'Oh, got careless, she caught me taking money from the till. The fact that I always pay it back before the end of the month didn't wash with her.'

The sirens were just up the street now, not long before they'd whizz past after another troubled sole.

Suddenly tires screeched and brought the Police cars to a halt outside. Everyone inside Sid's bar looked in pain and surprise as their ears came to terms with the cacophony of noise. The front door burst open and in ran detective Phillips, gun out in front. His eyes scoured the room and leveled on the back of a man dressed in black sitting opposite a pretty girl.

'Jack Nappier, stand up slowly and don't make any sudden movements!'

Jack took a last slug of his drink, smiled to Carol and rose slowly from the chair turning to face the wide eyed cop. 'Took your time!' he said with a snigger.

Carol starred in disbelief, Jack Nappier, 'oh my god' and with that thought she fainted.
