At least this ties in with my own 51st state ambitions (see my item below! However I am not sure the intention is at all complimentary here - judged by the other world location tags. My argument for us Brits is a lot more serious in intention. Present BBC Action network for/against score is 20 for and 19 opposed - could have been expected to be a whole lot worse, so i am quite encouraged.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/G1772
and whilst you're at it see if you sympathise with my other Peace Campaign: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/G2014

Please take the time to check out the BBC Action Network and my case for Britain to become the 51st State! No it's not intended to be a joke however far-fetched! Please press the support button if you can - though I will fully respect reasoned opposition!

Nothing is more important today than Peace - but how can individuals do their bit? Maybe this site opens up some realistic possibilities. I'm not saying this outfit has all the answers or has enough influence but we have to start somewhere. One thing I notice is that they base their argument on what level of defence does the UK need to defend itself. I feel we have a responsibility for the people outside our own Nation who need the support and defence capability of stronger Nations. After all that is what saved us and many other people from Nazi tyranny in the second world war. But they do argue that we need a stronger UN - and that I agree with. But that in itself poses the problem of the major powers finally learning to trust one another and let their national interests become subservient to the greater good of international peace. Now who said anything was ever easy!
But I'm not all starry eyed - there are bad people everywhere in every community and we see them killing their own for apparent sectarian reasons in Iraq and Palestine - and Africa, just like in the Balkans and even our own close-to-home Ireland, and many other places. It's these extremists we have to somehow overcome and control. I'm not sure you can make a good person out of a bad one, when they are as bad and evil as some of these people. But maybe. Whose to say? We can't give up. What we need, at least, is a strong organisation to really enforce peace where necessary. Up to now the UN and other peace-keeping forces have failed because they have not had the mandate or resources to defend the ordinary civilians when threatened by war lords and genocide. There are good people even in politics who are trying to make peace - but international politics and conflicting interests somehow always seem to get in the way.

Well, Tadpole since your Dad was kind enough to 'friend' me in my early foray into SU, I too wish you well. However, I am sure you will be getting a lot of the 'younger set' befriending you rather than another old guy - especially as I suspect your SU pages will match your dad's standard.
All the best!

I tripped over this one (as one does on SU) and found it of potential interest (it would take hours to check it out). My first impression is that at least it is worth a look if one wants a reasoned analysis of various issues. I have only read the marriage one and I am not too sure I like the apparent acceptance of same sex relationships in a civil marriage (or any context) - but that probably says more about my own 'bigotry' (at least in the eyes of others) than anything else. But that leads me to going off at a tangent (as I am wont to do!) - Aren't we all bigots (in someone's mind), once we come off the fence and decide what we believe, or feel comfortable with?
