Bipolar Disorder
My comments to Laura Gosselink. Please refer to Ms. Grosselink's article on blog entry 5 April 06.

"Thank you for your fine paper "Bipolar Disorder", Biology 202, First Web Reports, 1999. You've done an excellent research and presentation of the disease. Testimonials you included accurately captured the pathos of the illness; and most important to me personally, you defined bipolar 2, a grossly unappreciated variation of bipolar.

For 20 years I've been diagnosed with bipolar/manic depression, seven years ago it was amended to bipolar 2. Until recently, I doubted the validity of the biopolar 2 diagnosis. My bipolar 2 symptoms were never quite the same as those of bipolar 1, and there was little information to be found about the inconsistencies. It was my psychiatrist who forced me to understand that not only did I have a real illness but it was also fatal.

Attention given to bipolar 1 effectively overshadows the recognition of bipolar 2. The charismatic and bizarre mania identified with bipolar 1 is imaginative and titillating. Because of notorious bipolar 1 sufferers like Mary Key Letoureau, bipolar 1 attracts all the media attention. When in actuality, bipolar 2 is the more deadly.

Individuals with bipolar 2 generally have hypomania, as opposed to full-blow mania of bipolar 1, but those with bipolar 2 experience longer and more severe depression increasing the risk of suicide. The rate of bipolar 2 attempted and successful suicides are even greater than that of depression or what is starting to be known as unipolar. Bipolar 2 is a subtle lethal disease.
