A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of the countries.

Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks, when a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked: "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied: "Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German."

You could have heard a pin drop . . .

Chuckles....

And an orator said, "Speak to us of Freedom."

And he answered:

At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom,

Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them.

Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.

And my heart bled within me; for you can only be free when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you, and when you cease to speak of freedom as a goal and a fulfilment.

You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a grief,

But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.

And how shall you rise beyond your days and nights unless you break the chains which you at the dawn of your understanding have fastened around your noon hour?

In truth that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle the eyes.

And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard that you may become free?

If it is an unjust law you would abolish, that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead.

You cannot erase it by burning your law books nor by washing the foreheads of your judges, though you pour the sea upon them.

And if it is a despot you would dethrone, see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.

For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud, but for a tyranny in their own freedom and a shame in their won pride?

And if it is a care you would cast off, that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.

And if it is a fear you would dispel, the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.

Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace, the desired and the dreaded, the repugnant and the cherished, the pursued and that which you would escape.

These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.

And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.

And thus your freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself the fetter of a greater freedom.

Kahil Gibran

Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Well, when I got up this morning, I had my tea and cigarette and read the BBC World News. It kind of bummed me out. There is a lot of violence going on in the world today. Of course, the Iraq conflict, is the predominant conflict that is on everyone's mind. It has been reported that the U.S. government intends to deploy another 20,000 troops to Iraq, in the hopes of bolstering security and in stepping up the training programs of the Iraqi Army and Police. What is not clear is, if this 20,000 troops are the full compliment to be deployed, or are they actual combat troops, actual boots on the ground as they say. If it is the full compliment, what we will be actually seeing, is 4,000 to 5,000 troops actually on the front line doing what is necessary in fighting the insurgency and the other various militant groups. That is because, for every single soldier in the field, there are six or seven in the rear providing logistical support, (i.e., food ammunition, fuel, and spare parts, etc.). If this is indeed the case, I suggest that this deployment would not make much of a difference, in fact, if anything, they will only serve to provoke more attacks and those attacks will be more intense in character. In the minds of the insurgents and militants, this deployment will be an admission on the part of the U.S., that it's strategy in Iraq is not working, which of course it is not. Unfortunately, with this deployment, and the mishandling of the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq to date, there is not much more the U.S. can do. More U.S. and Iraqi lives will continue to be lost. On a lighter note; after finishing reading the news, I viewed veteranus's site, it made me laugh, which I needed after what I read in the news this morning. I recommend that everyone take a view of his site...it will put a smile on your face...take care guys
