The Google Ajax API team has been offering great services that you can use from JavaScript in the browser. I have talked about some of them on Ajaxian before (Feed API, Feed Discovery API, and the recent Language API) but now we have a great new release that enables you to access these APIs from Flash or the server side.

If you've embraced Web 2.0, you're probably using Twitter, a networking service that broadcasts messages of up to 140 characters through a variety of channels. As with any new form of communication, the rules of etiquette and usage are still evolving. And blogger Tangerine Toad has clearly had enough of certain behaviors. In a post at his blog, he provides some guidelines for keeping everyone happy:

MySocial 24×7 is a Firefox sidebar extension for Friendfeed. I'm one of those strict Firefox users that does not install too many plugins due to Firefox's high memory usage problems. However, MySocial just feels so lightweight that I'm not worried about it running in my sidebar, an echoed sentiment of Frederic in his review of the app (The Best FriendFeed App Lives in the Browser). Here's a closer look at MySocial 24×7.

A few weeks ago, there was some speculation that Facebook is planning a "Preferred Developer Program" to reward popular applications that play by the rules. The thinking went that just as Facebook punishes bad developers, it would reward good developers with preferential treatment - perhaps with softer limits on viral channel restrictions or more News Feed visibility.

Twitter was still "this year's Twitter" at SXSW (the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX), but another online app was almost equally as useful to me, Sched. For those in the Bay Area this week for the Web 2.0 Expo, Sched is back with a WEB2.0EXPO calendar.

Do you think social media is either Facebook and/or MySpace, and that's it? When I was recently chatting with a friend in the industry I mentioned I do social media consulting, he replied, "Oh, so you do Facebook?" Well, fortunately for all of us, social media goes far beyond Facebook! The problem is that people don't quite know what to do when they have eeked out all the possible value out of their Facebook networking.

I've commented before that Friend Feed makes for a really sweet Twitter client because of the way it threads replies and how easy it is to reply to another user. The only problem is trying to find all of your Twitter contacts on Friend Feed.

YouTube has started rolling out some new features to help us better manage our YouTube accounts. But I would like to think that it is just the site's first step towards making itself more "social network-like" video uploading site. Anyway, the beta features include a new inbox, my contacts and my video
