I'm still so bummed about Hunter. Not because he punched his own ticket, but because we've lost another of our great warriors, in this darkest hour when we need him most. He was on my short-short list of real heroes. In college, I read everything he'd ever published, and then went back and re-read a bunch of it. After I graduated, in my only stalker moment, I tracked down his fortified compound to ask him for a job. (Anita was pissed at first, but sympathetic when I said I was looking for a job. But the Doctor was travelling and he already had a good assistant.)

I picked up Fear and Loathing because of the debauchery and drugs, but it was the power and passion and beauty of his writing that hooked me. He didn't just write to convey a story, he banged his typewriter like Charlie Parker blew his sax--as a celebration of rhythm and sound and images. The first 50 pages of that Vegas adventure is still the most electric, gorgeous passage I've ever read.

But the reason I consider him a hero and a role model was his rabid belief in and defense of the American Dream. He was my kind of patriot who could cut through all of the cynicism and irony and contradictions to remind us what the American Dream could and should be. If we can ever finally slaughter the endlessly-breeding pack of slothful corporate swine who've infested this great country and shamelessly wallow in their bigoted, sadistic ignorance--their snouts evilly rooting around in everything we hold sacred, their foul, repressed asses waving a putrid taunt in the air.

I was concerned by the unevenness of his recent columns for espn.com, but my faith was restored when I found his last Rolling Stone article, written after the Bush-Kerry debates. Like a lot of us, he had a deluded belief in Kerry, but his words and ideas were as vital as ever.
