From... http://www.factmonster.com/spot/solsticeforkids.html

Summer Solstice

Sunday is a double whammy for celebrating. Not only is June 21, 2009 Father's Day, it is also the Summer Solstice. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, and marks the start of Summer. In the southern hemisphere, June 21 is the shortest day of the year. But why?

Here is what is going on. The earth takes a full year to orbit the sun. As it moves around the sun, the earth is actually tipped slightly on its axis. Because of this tipping, for half the year, the North Pole is angled slightly towards the sun, and for the other half of the year, the South Pole is angled slightly towards the sun. When your half of the planet is tipped closest to the sun, you have summer, and when it is tipped away, you have winter. Of course, it is just the opposite if you live on the other side of the earth.

When the North Pole is tipped towards the sun, it is slightly closer to the sun, which is why the northern hemisphere has summer and the angle of the Earth causes longer days at that time of year. When the earth circles to the other side of the sun, the North Pole is tipped away from the sun, so it experiences winter and shorter days.

The solstice is the midpoint between being moving closer to the sun and moving away. The name "solstice" comes from the latin for "stand still" because it appears the sun stands still in the sky for a day. At the Summer Solstice, the northern hemisphere has the longest day of the year. After the Summer Solstice, the days will get shorter in the the northern hemisphere and longer in the southern hemisphere. Then, at the Winter Solstice in December, the northern hemisphere has the shortest day of the year

The Summer Solstice has been a very special time of year for many cultures through history. People have built monuments dedicated to the solstice and tracking the sun and stars. Stonehenge in England and Machu Picchu in Peru are both believed to be such monuments. Midsummer has long been believed to be special for falling in love and getting married, and herbs and flowers harvested on Midsummer Day were thought to have magical qualities, like making people invisible.

Here is a rare and curious thing: an antique British WB-17 bomber flying over Afghan skies. These planes flew in the 1950s and 60s, performing top of the atmosphere reconnaissance. The U.S. Air Force retired the WB-17 decades ago. But NASA owns two, which it uses for an odd group of missions, including collecting cosmic dust from extremely high altitudes. It seems doubtful that NASA came all the way to Afghanistan to collect cosmic dust, but this would be an interesting region in which to search for traces of nuclear debris, drifting upwards from Iran, Pakistan, various Central Asian states, China, or India.
