Why Dale Jr. Is The�Key�

Thank goodness for drivers like Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch. They aren’t boring—and that makes NASCAR interesting. Some people think this is good for NASCAR. But do they bring viewers to the sport? Do Kyle’s driving style and Tony’s brash mouth make people tune in to see what they will do next? I love their unpredictability, but I’m not sure it’s helping the television ratings to a great degree. If it were, we would have seen that reflected in last year’s ratings.�

This year the ratings are up. The Daytona 500 had a 1 percent increase in viewership over last year. The Vegas race had a 12.7 percent increase in viewership and the Atlanta race had a 19.1 percent increase over last year. Why? My theory is that people are tuning in to see how Dale Jr. performs. The career move by Dale was the biggest story from the 2007 season. His migration to Hendrick Motorsports was all about performance, and the fans want to see weather he can measure up.
NASCAR recently announced a plan to bring back the “core” fans who have stopped watching NASCAR because they are disillusioned with the direction the sport has taken. But no amount of country music and no number of unrestrained displays of a driver’s personality or celebrations of NASCAR’s history will accomplish what the most popular driver can accomplish by winning races and possibly a championship.
