WHO WAS LILITH?
Darn. I never gave a hoot, until YA asked.

Changing Literary Representations of Lilith
and the Evolution of a Mythical Heroine

When singer/performer Sarah McLachlan founded an all-female touring music festival
in 1997 and named the event "Lilith Fair," the most widely asked question was:
"Who is Lilith?"

According to Sarah McLachlan, the story of Lilith is as follows:

Adam...asked God to send him a mate, a partner like the other creatures had. God obliged
by making Lilith and sending her to Adam. At first he was pleased, but then she opened her
mouth, showing that she had a mind of her own. He wanted her to lie beneath him and she
promptly refused, saying that they were equal and she would not be subservient to him.
Adam flew into a tantrum, so Lilith took off to calmer territory. -- (Childerhose xiii)

This overtly feminist version of Lilith's story is not rare in modern culture. In 1976, for example,
Lilith, an independent Jewish women's magazine with a self-proclaimed feminist focus,
was founded and given Lilith's name.

There exist countless other invocations of Lilith as a feminist heroine in modern culture.
In 1991, Dagmar Nick published a novel in which Lilith tells her own sarcastic version of the
Lilith myth, including her own subversive reasons for having been expelled from the Garden of Eden.
A more recent text -- Which Lilith?, 1998 -- plays upon the multiplicity of Lilith's identity by incorporating
various re-creations of Lilith by modern feminist writers. Yet the story of Lilith as a feminist heroine
is just one of the stories of her identity. Before the thirteenth century, many different versions of
Lilith's identity existed, none of which heralded her as a positive or welcoming figure.

The uncertainty and debate surrounding Lilith stems from the fact that she developed as a
mythical figure over centuries of time, with many strands of her story evolving along completely
separate lines. Because of this, Lilith was various known as a succubus, as a child-slaying witch
and as the equitable first companion of Adam. Not until the writing of the Zohar in 1200 CE
did these distinct guises of Lilith combine to form a complete picture of her identity.

Yet the debates continued, for Lilith had become such a well-known and widely used mythical
figure that her identity was continuously being appropriated. Through today, countless writers
have ascribed personality traits to Lilith which often, seemingly, have little to do with her identity
as it was known in any of the founding texts. This was possible because of men such as
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and John Keats, Romantic writers who brought Lilith from
the realm of Jewish mysticism and thought into that of "mainstream" literature and culture.

After being brought to this level, Lilith's story was appropriated by the most famous
artist/writer of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In his art and poetry,
Rossetti employed the image of Lilith in such a way as to open her to feminist interpretation.
Bram Dijkstra states, "Lilith, who, in her unwillingness to play second fiddle to Adam, was, as
Rossetti's work already indicated, widely regarded as the world's first virago [late nineteenth-
century feminist]". Rossetti, therefore, is responsible for beginning the transformation of
Lilith that would allow her to move from the demoness of early Jewish culture to the femin

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST HUMOUR

A Unitarian is just a Quaker with Attention Deficit Disorder.

~~~
A Unitarian Universalist minister sees a child out in front of a house in the
neighborhood she drives through on her way to church, with a sign:
"Adorable kittens -- FREE."
The next day, the minister notices the child out in front of a neighborhood
church with a sign saying:
"Adorable Methodist Kittens -- FREE."
A couple of days later, the kid is posted in front of the synagogue
with a sign:
"Adorable Jewish Kittens -- FREE."
So the Minister isn't surprised when, the next Sunday the child is in front of
the church she serves with a sign promising:
"Adorable Unitarian Universalist kittens."
"Now really," she tells the child, "they are adorable kittens, but I have a problem
with your advertising. I've seen your kittens change their religion every day for
a week. Why do you think I'll believe that these are UU kittens now,
all of a sudden?"
"Well," said the child, "Now they have their eyes open."
~~~

"Honey, it's time to get up and get dressed for church!"

"I don't want to go to church. I don't think the people like me, and I don't like them.
Give me two reasons why I should go to church!"

"Well, for one, it's good for you. And second, you're the pastor!"
~*~*~*~

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM IN BRIEF: Very Brief ~

With its historical roots in the Jewish and Christian traditions,
Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion -- that is, a religion
that keeps an open mind to the religious questions people have
struggled with in all times and places.

We believe that personal experience, conscience and reason should be
the final authorities in religion, and that in the end religious authority
lies not in a book or person or institution, but in ourselves.

We are a "non-creedal" religion: we do not ask anyone to ascribe to a creed.

Our congregations are self-governing. Authority and responsibility are vested
in the membership of the congregation. Each Unitarian Universalist congregation
is involved in many kinds of programs. Worship is held regularly, the insights
of the past and the present are shared with those who will create the future,
service to the community is undertaken, and friendships are made.

A visitor to a UU congregation will very likely find events and activities such
as church school, day-care centers, lectures and forums, support groups,
poetry festivals, family events, adult education classes and study groups.

Canadian Humour

We don't say "ruff" when we mean roof as in kangaroof.
We say "out" and "about" as in oot and a-boot, not "owt" and "abowt".
We close the lights, not turn them off.
Only Ontari-ari-a-ri-ons say "zed" - we say "zee" like normal people.
Ha ha ha!
But, oh yeah, my big but:
In French we say, "prendre une decision" which literally means "take a decision".
Franglish's only contribution to the world I guess, because now I hear
even the most educated say that they are going to
"take a decision".
My immediate reaction is to laugh and to ask anybody who says this:
"Oh, and where might you be taking your decision to?"
I laugh because I may take my decisions in French but
in English I make my decisions.
Preferably before I get up in the morning.
Sawreee, because we're not sore-eee.
Minor oversight:
Quebec's legal system is Civil Law, not Canadian Common Law.
It was too common for us. ha ha ha!
We don't go to taverns, hic, we go to bars.
Some of us wear toques, which you don't smoke but wear
on your head and is pronounced "tuque".
Whoever dreamt up the above is out of touch:
Quebec is French! Not maybe, it is!
We founded the blimey country and gave it its name:
Ka-na-da.
We'd like to give it back to the Indians but they don't want it.
Those Ontarians messed it up so badly nobody else wants it but them.
ha ha ha!
And yes, the rivalry between Upper and Lower Canada,
a.k.a. Ontario and Quebec is unparalled and the jokes abound between us.
"'Twas ever thus," said Bugs Bunny. :]

"Ohhhhhhhhhhh Canada, our home and native land."

Sure a heck beats:

"O, ohh sayyy, can you seeeee,
the uh uh bedbugs on meee..."

I love it.

Is simply doesn't get much better than this in Eskino Art.
The theme is pan-Canadian.
Wish I could paint like this.
