It was promptly censored by the communist government.

In 1984 an uncensored version was smuggled to Germany, where it was published and devoured by readers. That work was followed by "Oppressive Tango" in Romania but she was eventually prohibited from publishing inside her country for her criticism of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's rule and its feared secret police, the Securitate."The Romanian national press was very critical of these works while, outside of Romania, the German press received them very positively," the Academy said.

Most of Müller 's work is in German, but some works have been translated into English, French and Spanish, including "The Passport," "The Land of Green Plums," "Traveling on One Leg" and "The Appointment."

This year, her novel Atemschaukel was nominated for the German Book Prize and is now among the six finalists. In this book Müller describes the journey of a young man to a labour camp in the Soviet Union as an example for the fate of the German population in Siebenbürgen (Transylvania) after World War II. It was inspired by the experience of Oskar Pastior, whose oral memories she had made notes of, but also by what happened to her own mother.

This project eventually extended to places such as Nepal, New Guinea, Dahomey (now Benin), and Morocco. Penn's later platinum prints of female nudes and of cigarette butts are characterized by the same tonal subtlety, compositional virtuosity, and serenity that mark his fashion photography and portraiture.

Three hundred of Penn's pictures were published in Moments Preserved (1960). His other books include Worlds in a Small Room (1974), a collection of portraits of people he encountered in remote foreign locales, and Passage (1991), a retrospective survey of more than 400 examples of his work in portraiture, fashion, ethnic studies, and still life. In 1996 he donated his archives to the Art Institute of Chicago. The museum organized a traveling retrospective of his work the following year.

The school was an institution attached to the University of Bristol, which emphasized scientific subjects and modern languages. This was an unusual arrangement at a time when secondary education in Britain was still dedicated largely to the classics, and something for which Dirac would later express gratitude.

Dirac studied electrical engineering at the University of Bristol, completing his degree in 1921. He then decided that his true calling lay in the mathematical sciences and, after completing a BA in applied mathematics at Bristol in 1923, he received a grant to conduct research at St John's College, Cambridge, where he would remain for most of his career. At Cambridge, Dirac pursued his interests in the theory of general relativity (an interest he gained earlier as a student in Bristol) and in the nascent field of quantum physics, under the supervision of Ralph Fowler.

Dirac's first remarkable contribution came before he earned his doctorate in 1926. In his paper "The Fundamental Equations of Quantum Mechanics" (1925), Dirac decided to extricate the fundamental point in Heisenberg's now famous paper. But the most startling result of Dirac's equation for the electron was the recognition of the possibility of negative kinetic energy. In other words, his equations implied for the electron an entirely novel type of motion whereby energy had to be put into the electron in order to bring it to rest. The most startling consequences of Dirac's theory of the electron consisted in the opening up of the world of antimatter. Clearly, if negative electrons had their counterparts in positrons, it was natural to assume that protons had their counterparts as well.

This contribution of Dirac came during a marvelously creative period in his life, from 1925 to 1930. Its crowning conclusion was the publication of his Principles of Quantum Mechanics, a work still unsurpassed for its logical compactness and boldness.

A telling measure of Dirac's main achievements in physics was the recognition that greeted his work immediately. In 1932 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society and given the most prestigious post in British science, the Lucasian chair of mathematics at Cambridge. He received the Royal Society's Royal Medal in 1939 and its Copley Medal in 1952. He was a member of many academies, held numerous honorary degrees, and was a guest lecturer in universities all over the world. He married Margaret Wigner, sister of Nobel laureate Eugene P. Wigner, in 1937.

The second half of Dirac's working life was occupied mainly with cosmology and the subject of "large numbers," or numbers with cosmic significance. In the 1972, he accepted a post as professor of physics at Florida State University, and he continued there until his death in Tallahassee on October 20, 1984.
To speed the work, he set up winter and summer operations in far-flung parts of Mexico, logging thousands of miles over poor roads. He battled illness, forded rivers in flood, dodged mudslides and sometimes slept in tents.

Borlaug realised technology alone won't get things done.He realised that you need a synergy between technology and public policy. He tried to build and maintain contacts with political leaders. But the Green Revolution has also demanded intensive use of fertilisers and water, prompting critics, including some agricultural scientists, to dub the movement environmentally unsustainable.

Borlaug responded that the real problem was not his agricultural techniques, but the runaway population growth that had made them necessary. He also felt that scepticism often came from "elitists" who were rich enough not to worry about where their next meal was coming from. But over time, he acknowledged the validity of some environmental concerns, and embraced more judicious use of fertilisers and pesticides.

Borlaug's enthusiasm for crop science endured to his last days.In March this year, Borlaug invited wheat experts from five continents at a conference in Mexico to caution that a virulent disease may threaten wheat plants worldwide. Research at the conference showed that a new form of stem rust that originated in Uganda in 1999 has spread across East Africa and is marching towards South Asia.

"We should have no illusions -- a global food crisis is still a distinct possibility if governments and international institutions fail to support a rescue mission," Borlaug had told the assembled delegates. "Stem rust never sleeps, neither do rust workers (plant scientists)," he said, adding in jest, "a few jet-lagged scientists in this audience may belie that statement."

Amitav Ghosh's fictional world is one of restless narrative motion. His central figures are travelers and diasporic exiles: exemplars of "the migrant sensibility" that Salman Rushdie calls "one of the central themes of this century of displaced persons." If in Rushdie's metaphor "the past is a country from which we have all emigrated," Ghosh's conflation of time and space--and of distinct times and distant places--is even more extreme.

He treats national borders and conceptual boundaries as permeable fictions to be constantly transgressed. Through the multiple criss-crossings enabled by a free-ranging narrative, discrete binaries of order and category give way to a realm of mirror images and hybrid realities. Reason becomes passion, going away is also coming home, and the differences between us and them, now and then, here and there are disrupted by the itinerant maps of a roaming imagination.

Amitav Ghosh lives in New York with his wife, Deborah Baker, the author of In Extremis: The Life of Laura Riding (1993) and a senior editor at Little Brown and Co., and his children Leela and Nayan.

Inspired by the Byzantine liturgy, Elytis combines the biblical story of the creation with modern Greek history. In this work the poet identifies himself in the first section, 'Genesis', with the sun and the entire Aegena world and his race. In the second,'The Passion,' he passes through the barbaric war decade, comparing humankind's suffering with the suffering of Christ. Eventually, like Dante in Paradise, he sees the sun, love, and beauty. "If there is, I think, for each one of us a different, a personal Paradise," Elytis once said, "mine should irreparably be inhabited by trees of words that the wind dresses in silver, like poplars, by men who see the rights of which they have been deprived returning to them, and by birds that even in the midst of the truth of death insist on singing in Greek and on saying, eros, eros, eros!""
In 1978 he published a long poetic work, Maria Nefeli, which was finished when he returned to Greece. Its alternating monologues are spoken by a girl, Maria Nephele and the Antiphonist, the poet himself. Much of his life, Elytis spent in semiseclusion, focusing only on his art, but after the Nobel Prize followed a period of busy traveling.

Elytis never married; during his last years his companion was the poet Ioulita Iliopoulou. Elytis died of a heart attack on March 18, 1996.

His collected poems appeared posthumously in 1997. Elytis was also a talented painter and produced illustrations of his lyrical world in gouaches and collages.
His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many hip hop, pop and contemporary R&B artists.

Jackson donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his foundations, charity singles, and support of 39 charities. Other aspects of his personal life, including his often changing appearances and eccentric behavior, generated significant controversy which damaged his public image.
The singer had experienced health concerns since the early 1990s and conflicting reports regarding the state of his finances since the late 1990s. Jackson married twice and fathered three children, all of which caused further controversy. In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges.
Jackson's highly publicized personal life, coupled with his successful career, made him a part of popculture for almost four decades.
Before his death, Jackson had announced a 50-date sell-out This Is It comeback tour, in London, England.
