I crossed this road so many times back in the 60's, often in weather just like this. Very near where the artist is standing is The Eagle and Child pub (known generally as The Bird and Baby), meeting place of the Inklings literary group, the most celebrated members of which were probably C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
