ExHam2000 - Yes, just like www.poetry.com, in that you have to know what you're doing, and what you're getting, and you don't seem to really get much out of it, except to look at some great, and some not so great, pictures, and you can buy a book with your picture in it, along with other pictures, if you'd like to have or own a book with your picture in it, and I do have a couple of pictures on this site, and they did send me "invitations" to conventions which cost quite a bit of money to go to, where my picture(s) would get displayed, plus some sort of "prize," but I'd have to pay to have it shipped to me, but it was something like $200.00 to have the "heavy cup" shipped to me, but I never sent for that, so it could be opinion as far as whether it's a ripoff or not. Sure they sell books, everyone needs to make a living, but you don't have to buy one, but in order to get your picture published in the book, you do need to give them or send them permission, but you don't have to buy any books. As far as winning goes, it's sort of like Publishers Clearing House, except that one I think may actually be a ripoff as I have entered that for over 30 years and have won nothing, except this year when they sent me 6 $400.00 checks, $2,400.00 total, but you need to take those and spend them towards buying something from them, so it seems to be a ripoff to me...but I did buy a few magazines from them over the years, but only those that I was already getting as PCH did give me almost 50% off of what I was paying by direct subscription, but I only did that for 3 magazines and for only 3 years I think it was.

As far as ripoffs goes, I check the Better Business Bureau nearest to the business, plus maybe nearest to me and the main www.bbb.org web site as well, for any complaints against the businesses, but that's still not a 100% sure thing that the business is legit, but it sure can help you decide, especially if a bunch of complaints are there.

So, all things considered, I don't mind the site, and I "take it with a grain of sand" as the saying goes. I take it at "face value" but I only "bank on" what I see, pictures that I can place there and view, but I wonder if they make any money off of them that I'm not aware of???

It's like when I sent pictures of tornado damage in the Eau Claire, WI. area, and some surrounding areas, and I received nothing back, with the developer claiming I had something wrong with the camera I had nothing wrong with. That was 1980 after the June 15th, 1980 tornado, and I have never sent film in to be developed since then. I used a 35MM Canon back then, but since then I used either instant cameras or these digital cameras to take pictures with, even though I received 3 times an offer where I supposedly would get a free 35MM camera, plus a lifetime supply, or 100 rolls, whichever came first, of free film...I didn't take them up on that offer either as you'd need them to develop the film as I didn't have my own darkroom.

I think they kept my film, probably thinking that I'd use the pictures for some sort of insurance scam, but I had people asking me to give them the pictures so they could supply them for insurance on their damage. I thought to myself that if I ever see any of my pictures that I took back in 1980 in any magazine, that I'd sue them, as I remember most of what I took, like a straw that the tornado "shoved" into a telephone pole, and a boat on a trailer where the trailer was turned 90 degrees and was tilted up against the trailor home, etc...and a funny or laughable one where a Shell Oil sign had it's "S" taken off, so all you saw were the letters "H" "E" "L" "L" on it.

RoseDesRochers - Many of you have likely seen the following contest "Free photo Contest over 100,000 in prices, Enter online Now!"

You have most likely sent off your photo and received a letter back stating that your photo will be published and that you are a winner. You are just one of the many who have become the prey of picture.com.

They will publish anything. Everyone is a winner. In order to be published in the book, you have to purchase the book and sadly there is no guarantee that you will receive the book.

A Google search for the following terms, picture.com, The International Library of
Photograph, will pull up several warnings about the company. They have now
gained a national reputation for preying upon unsuspecting photographers. They are a vanity publisher. Do your homework people.
