AmericanFear - as an economist i believe that the minimum wage is counter productive because it makes the job market narrower forcing companies to be more selective of their employees.
Raising the minimum wage might help a % of people, maybe even a significant percentage, but noone should be told what to pay their employees, if the minimum wage was lowered or even 0 the market would set the wage of low paying jobs based on demand for said job. If this were to happen overnight, at first some people might have trouble but by the time the market adjusted everyone would be better off. Just because one has the right to an acceptable standard of living does not mean it should be an entitlement to every mcdonalds employee

wolfgrrl - From the page: "Working for the national minimum wage is no longer enough to keep your head above water a new study shows.

It is no longer possible to fund an â€acceptable standard of living†on the National Minimum Wage, a new study has revealed. Implying that thousands more households than previously estimated are left coping with life below the poverty line.

According to the research, completed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a single person living in Britain needs to take home the pre-tax equivalent of £13,400 a year just to meet everyday costs. A couple with 2 children on the other hand need to find £26,800 a year to be able to provide the basics for their family."
