I had forgotten about The Dandy -- mainly because he just
hasn't come up on my radar screen for two or three months.

If he lived down and under here, a long holiday at this time
of the year would be perfectly understandable -- you simply
cannot dress in layers and pocket squares when the temperature
is up around 30, and there is a limit to how much time you can
spend cruising around in airconditioned limousines, or indeed
where you can go around these parts.

But on inquiring further, I find he lives
in California, and summer is no excuse.
He has close ties to the fashion industry . . .
and I think that would be the problem.

In fact he and his crowd would live off the back of the
fashion industry, drifting from soiree to soiree but not
when a global financial crisis really sets in.

The Dandy says so himself -- he
now has to go out and work!
The Dandy may even soon be going
door to door, offering to do odd jobs.
It is not a good look at all.

Also . . .

The Dandy declared Sebastian Horsley (banned
from entering the US) Dandy of the Year for 2008.

I confess I knew nothing about this geezer,
so here's a bit of bio (click his pic).

I liked it anyway.

One of the best guides to dandyism I have come across - either online or in books. Dandyism.net includes lovely fashion tips, a canon on dandyism, links and a fine blog that brings the dandy's perambulations into the 21st C.

I recommend reading Jules Barbey D'Aurevilly's "Dandyism" (1844) while sipping a fine white wine and then casting a discerning eye over this site.

Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw were dandies, to be a dandy is to be a relic from the old times where fancy clothed men and youngsters walked with canes in the crowded streets of London.
