psykroll - I've used Pidgin since it was called gaim and I love it. Pidgin is getting better with time. The latest version at the time of this review supports video and voice with google chat. If you're tired of using different clients to talk to all your friends or you just want to protect yourself from IM security risks, try Pidgin.

hasues - I typically use Kopete, but Pidgin is simply the better client for protocol compatibility, plugins, and usefulness. While it doesn't integrate itself in KDE as well as Kopete does (for obvious reasons), it is the more advanced client (at least comparing it to the 3.5 series version of Kopete). Currently it uses evolution's address book for meta contact info, while Kopete uses Kaddress book, so that is about the only differentiating feature that was of interest on the Kopete side. On the other hand, Pidgin does a way better job using encrypted messaging than Kopete in my opinion, but that's just an opinion.

fooziex - Very nice IM client. I've been using this as my only IM client for years now, and while it's not perfect (not many reverse-engineered applications are), it's very well done and much less obtrusive than most of the official clients it replaces. I strongly recommend using the OTR (off-the-record) plugin for pidgin. It provides strong encryption, and beyond that, deniability.
