I thought Ayn Rand was pretty cool. What books do you recommend that offer a better source of philosophic ideals? Is there another contemporary philosopher that has had such an influence? You live in a capitalist society, where every individual's action is rewarded for their contributions to society. You can call it 'greed and selfishness' but you also need to thank capitalism's ability to harness these natural human behaviors. I mean, why do millions of people go to work every day. Ayn Rand is just acknowledging it. I like her book because it reflects on society. So few books really investigate the 'why are we here' type questions. This one does. I would rather have a serious commentary on reality in my fiction rather than elaborate fantasy characters. I think the John Galt book was really just about being rational instead of floating in the currents of group thought as so many people do. Think for yourself because people are cows is what I got out of it. Don't take this the wrong way, but Ayn Rand was a mediocre author of rather bland melodramatic fiction in which she used paper thin stock characters to forward her "philosophy" that is really nothing other than a Solipsistic ethical system thinly shrouded with Aristotle. Her completely over-the-top views on politics and philosophy was essentially an over-reaction to her childhood as she came of age in Soviet era Russia. Academia finds her 'work' laughable at best, but she says what a lot of college age kids want to hear; i.e. a philosophical rationalization for greed and selfishness. Hence the popularity, I guess.
