sophistry - well these RFID chips are, i think, designed for GOVERNMENT security- at the expense of the security and Rights of the Individual.
In other words, the reading devices are NOT "hacks", but finished, end-use devices possibly made by the same companies who manufactured the chips.
The purpose was likely for law enforcement to scan rfid chips, which are not only available in credit cards, but slowly making an appearance in clothing, and on products such as gillette's razor packages in costco.
Its no coincidence that these machines, far from the homebrew devices made cheaply and encased in radio shack hobby enclosures, instead look glossy and high-tech in polished plastics, complete with antennas and corporate logos!

shhh... If we don't tell people that their credit cards are insecure, then the problem won't exist.

arleas - Nice! I saw the video clip where Adam Savage claimed he couldn't do the show on RFID in credit cards because the credit card lawyers said no, and NOW he's backing off that statement and claiming they didn't do it because it was their own decision.

I think this is a challenge. If anyone has the know-how, and a video camera, you should put together a little video of your own (with your Identity masked if necessary). Stuff like this NEEDS to be known, even if the credit card guys don't like it

BTW: The only reason I don't make my own video is because I lack the know-how.

teknoe - Texas Instruments, Visa, Discover, Mastercard, and other companies block an episode of Mythbusters. The episode was about how insecure and "hackable" RFID really is. These companies are advertisers on Discovery, and use RFID in many of their products, so Discovery backend down and pulled the show. I am hoping this gets leaked onto the internet.
